Band councilThe governing body of a BAND under the Indian Act. It is composed of one or more chiefs and usually several councillors (formerly called “headmen”). Some bands choose their councils today under the ELECTIVE SYSTEM, and some by CUSTOM. See also HEREDITARY CHIEFS and TRIBAL COUNCIL.
