Abnormal cells in the lining of the food pipe (also called the gullet or oesophagus). The areas of abnormal cells are called dysplasia. Barrett's oesophagus slightly increases the risk of developing cancer of the oesophagus. It is most likely to be diagnosed in people who have a long history of burning indigestion.
