incaustumLiterally: "to burn in". It is a _type_ of ink that essentially incorporates itself into the paper or writing surface. It's not just "ink", even though that is the origin. In modern times, there are many formulations of inks that behave quite contrary to incaustum, example: dry-erase markers.
