Active Server Pages Abbreviated as ASP, a specification for a dynamically created Web page with a .ASP extension that utilizes ActiveX scripting -- usually VB Script or Jscript code. When a browser requests an ASP, the Web server generates a page with HTML code and sends it back to the browser. So ASPs are similar to CGI scripts, but they enable Visual Basic programmers to work with familiar tools. ASP is also short for application service provider

blue screen A process used to blend together two or more images. Best known for weather broadcasts, blue screening works by placing an actor or image in front of a blue screen, applying a mask to identify the picture's blue elements, and replacing them with another image, known as background. Blue was originally chosen because it best contrasts with skin color, but green and red are used also. The process is now used for creating composite computer images using software such as Ultimatte (www.ultimatte.com) by Ultimatte Corporation of Chatsworth, California.

chipset A number of integrated circuits designed to perform one or more related functions. For example, one chipset may provide the basic functions of a modem while another provides the CPU functions for a computer. Newer chipsets generally include functions provided by two or more older chipsets. In some cases, older chipsets that required two or more physical chips can be replaced with a chipset on one chip. The term is often used to refer to the core functionality of a motherboard.

chiclet keyboard A chiclet keyboard refers to keyboards with elevated keys that have some space between them in a design that enables the keys to blend into the surrounding area of the keyboard. A chiclet keyboard's keys are rectangular in shape with rounded edges as compared to the slanted-edge keys featured in traditional keyboards. One main advantage to a chiclet keyboard is that with the keys having a slightly larger area there's a smaller chance of hitting the wrong key. Chiclet keyboards get their name from the "Chiclets" brand of rectangular-shaped chewing gum. The chiclet keyboard design has become more popular recently, especially in netbooks and notebooks, and is prominently used in Apple MacBooks and Asus laptops. At the same time, there are many critics of the look and feel of chiclet keyboards.

niche Online the word niche is used in a number of technologies to refer to a specific topic, subject or category. Web sites and blogs may provide news and content on a niche (e.g. a blog about sports or finance), while online sellers often sell in niche categories. It is believed that by focusing on a niche topic or category you will see higher traffic numbers for your Web site or blog-or see higher profits in online selling-as you have less competition in a niche area.

semiconductor A material that is neither a good conductor of electricity (like copper) nor a good insulator (like rubber). The most common semiconductor materials are silicon and germanium. These materials are then doped to create an excess or lack of electrons. Computer chips, both for CPU and memory, are composed of semiconductor materials. Semiconductors make it possible to miniaturize electronic components, such as transistors. Not only does miniaturization mean that the components take up less space, it also means that they are faster and require less energy.

Tunnel Broker In computer networking terminology, a tunnel broker is the phrase used to describe a service that provides a network tunnel. The Tunnel Broker model is based on dedicated servers called Tunnel Brokers that automatically manage tunnel requests coming from users. The most common usage of the phrase is in reference to IPv6, where a tunnel broker provides IPv6 tunnels to Web sites and users. The Network Working Group defines IPv6 Tunnel Broker in RFC 3053. The IPv6 global Internet uses a lot of tunnels over the existing IPv4 infrastructure. The tunnels are difficult to configure and maintain and too complex for the isolated end user, so the concept of the tunnel broker was presented to help early IPv6 adopters to hook up to an existing IPv6 network. See tunneling and RFC 3053: IPv6 Tunnel Broker. See also "Understanding IPv6" in the Did You Know...? section of Webopedia.
